What is LVP?

Luxury vinyl planks are made of compressed layers of vinyl with a high resolution image overlay to mimic the look of another material. Planks are generally used to mimic hardwood, because the shape is similar to real wood planks. LVP has several layers, but the main one is its vinyl core, which makes the planks durable but flexible.

What is SPC?

Stone plastic composite flooring is similar in that it includes a high resolution image, overlaid onto vinyl and coated with a transparent wear layer to protect the floor from scratches, stains, fading, etc. However, the core material in SPC is a hybrid of plastic and compressed limestone powder. This makes the planks hard and rigid, rather than soft and flexible.

What is the difference between LVP and SPC?

The rigid structure of SPC gives it a few advantages. While both can be installed over virtually any solid subfloor, LVP needs its subfloor to be completely level and free of any dents, obstructions, etc. The flexible material will take on the shape of any imperfections, whereas SPC will keep its own shape, regardless of the floor below it.

By the same token, SPC is also more durable, resistant to dents and other damage. It will last longer and hold up better to wear. The rigidity of SPC also allows it to provide more support underfoot, while LVP’s pliability gives it a softer, more comfortable feel for walking on. SPC is also slightly thicker than LVP, and its look and texture tend to be a bit more realistic.

SPC has many advantages over LVP, but it does have one drawback. Its rigid, composite construction makes it more expensive than vinyl. While both are still cost-effective compared to wood, stone, or tile, if you’re on a tight budget, LVP is likely a better bet.

What should I use to clean my LVP?

LVP floors can be safely mopped, but we advise against leaving pools or standing water on the floor. If you’d like to use a spray, we recommend a cleaner that does not contain oils or waxes. Your local flooring retailer or hardware store will likely carry a suitable cleaner product – most cleaners formulated for LVP contain the same basic ingredients.

Can I install my kitchen cabinets over my LVP?

Our installation guides indicate you should not install cabinets directly on a floating floor. The weight can prevent the floor from moving as it needs to and could cause buckling.

What kind of floor mat can I use over my LVP?

Mats should specify that the backing is oil free. LVP and SPC have a vinyl top layer, and oils can bleed into it causing discolouration. We advise against mats with a grippy rubber backing as this can also transfer to the floor.

Does the product need to acclimate? How do I store product prior to installation?

  1. Cartons should be always stored horizontally. Never store boxes on their sides.
  2. Always store boxes on a flat and level surface.
  3. Protect carton corners from damage.
  4. Flooring should be installed in indoor climate-controlled locations between 65°F – 85°F (18.3°C – 29.5°C).
  5. Substrate should be no less than 65 °F (18.3 °C) for 48 hours before, during and after installation

Is LVP waterproof?

While many floor options boast to have water resistance, luxury vinyl is actually waterproof, making it ideal in all rooms, especially kitchens and bathrooms. Thanks to its multiple layers, including a durable wear layer and rigid core, luxury vinyl planks can withstand moisture, heavy foot traffic, scratches and spills.
